Connect Through Play

Marble Drop

Background

The intention behind the creation of the Marble Drop is play. When creating this project, Emrys and their project partner wanted a way where two remote agents—parent and child, friends, lovers—can play together despite being apart. One of the interesting aspects of this project is the real time feedback between the two players when interacting with the ramp device. When one player places their marble at the top of the ramp, if there is a ball in the other device, it will drop the other player’s marble and vice versa. This reciprocity through simple mechanics has an addictive cyclical quality that will entice both players to keep placing their marble at the top of the ramp. We wanted a game with simple interactions, reciprocative, and provided feedback of presence to both players.
